Enigma
You’ve got to take the fence down
Said the inspector sternly.
Erected a solid barrier
Between you and your neighbor!
I reached out
Touching the old wood
That had stood there for so long
Unseen, uncared for.
My hand felt the coolness of metal
Long bands of metal
Separating the fraying wooden panels.
Touching it with the sleeve of my coat
I saw the grime of years falling away
Revealing the most luscious bands of copper.
In the end
After hours of gentle ministrations
The fence remained standing
Its magic restored
a glowing shimmering panel of light
in that forgotten corner of the old garden.
When I awoke,
I was still in wonderment
At the magic of what I had seen
In my dream that night.
