Mine Rescue in Chile, 2010

Should man have gone
where they had been
deep in the womb of the mountain?

Earth spasmed
threatening life
as it had been.

Alone in the dark,
they prayed and sang,
the underground spring
a blessing in each drop of water,
eternal sustenance of life.

Then there was light
and a voice spoke to them:
Fear not.
We will come for you.
Know that the passage from the womb
of the earth
will be long and arduous,
but we will be with you.
When you reach the end
of the passage,
you will be where you began,
born to a new day, a new life.

They prayed:

“I was with God
and I was with the devil.
God held my hand
and made me safe.”
